Paul Jones | Paul Jones was born in 1804, probably the son of Asael and Elizabeth Jones. Deborah C. VanSciver was born in 1807 to John and Jennet Fenimore VanSciver, all of Willingboro New Jersey. Paul was a Lieutenant in the service when he married Deborah VanSciver in 1828. In 1833, Paul and Deborah purchased land from William and Sarah VanSciver. The 1849 map shows their farmhouse on the Delaware River at 1408 Second Street near present day Peachtree Avenue. In 1849 Paul was elected trustee and appointed Secretary of Beverly United Methodist Church. In 1855 a Methodist Society was formed in Delanco. In 1857 the family transferred membership. The Delanco Methodist Episcopal Church was incorporated in 1858. Paul was named to the first Board of Trustees and was elected Treasurer in 1858. In 1855 Paul was listed as a Willingboro freeholder and Burlington County Chosen Freeholder in 1863. In the 1860 Census Paul listed himself as a farmer. In 1863, Paul was listed as Steward and member of the official Bridgeboro Circuit. Paul was also a member of the short-lived Beverly & Dunk’s Ferry Steamboat Company. Paul E. Kairaitis | Paul Edward Karaitis was born in Delanco October 13, 1923 , the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Karaitis of Laurel Street, Delanco. Paul married Laura Mae Lucas on May 6, 1942. He joined the US Army in WWII and trained at Camp Kilmer in New Jersey, then Fort Campbell in Kentucky before being deployed to Gotha Germany. He served in the 701st Tank Battalion and attained the rank of Corporal (Tech 5). Frank was killed in action in Germany on February 25, 1945 when his tank was hit by enemy fire. He was initially buried in Margratten, Holland, then repatriated and reinterred in Beverly National Cemetery. He was awarded the Purple Heart. Photos and artifacts were donated to Delanco HB by his son, Thom Lord. David E. Karmade | David Emilio "Butch" Karmade was born December 7, 1946, the son of Francis "Frank" P. Karmade, exactly five years after Pearl Harbor. He served in the US Marine Corps, stationed at Camp Lejune, attaining the rank of Sergeant. After the war he was employed by Certified Steel in Lawrenceville, New Jersey until his retirement. He lived on Ash Street in Delanco for a time. Quieter times found him doing a little fishing down the shore. He was a friend of Bill. Francis P. Karmade, Sr. | Francis Preston "Frank" Karmade, Sr. was born Aug 1, 1917 in New Jersey, the son of Emilio Karmade and Laura McCord; Brother of Joseph T. and Robert A., Mary and David E. Karmade and David G. McCord; Father of Frank P. Karmade, Jr. Frank entered the US Army March 1, 1944 and served in WWII; B Co, 23rd Inf, 2nd Inf Div. He first served in Germany, then in France, where he was wounded. He returned to his unit after a brief convalescence. He separated with the rank of Private. He married Estelle Dadino. Robert A. "Midge" Karmade | Robert A. Karmade was born October 16, 1918 in Beverly, the son of Laura McCord and Emelio Karmade; Brother of Joseph Karmade. Robert was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and was very proud of his service with the 87th Infantry Division, the 'Golden Acorn' while in Europe. He was a member of the VFW Post 3020 Riverside. He married Annette 'Mickey' Brous-Karmade; Children: Susan and Robert. C. Karmade. Robert worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 19 years and retired in 1983. He was an avid bowler and loved to dance. Robert died May 3, 2012 at age 92–93 in Newark, DE. Richard A. Kauffman | Richard A. Kauffman was born in 1947 in Newark NJ and raised in South River. He graduated in 1965 and studied at Mercer County College and Thomas Edison College. Herbert H. Kearns | Herbert Harrison Kearns was born on December 11, 1925 in Baden, North Carolina. He joined the US Marine Corps and fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima. He moved to Beverly NJ and went to work for RCA – David Sarnoff Research Center near Princeton, NJ, helping to develop solar energy collectors. He met Gilda "Jill" Ulissi in Beverly and married her in 1950. He later became a teacher at Holy Cross High School in Delran. He was a key force in building the American Legion Hall in Riverside. Later in life, Herb and Jill bought a house on McCay Way in Delanco. Bernard F. Keating | Bernard F. "Bernie" Keating was born at home in Bordentown on October 18, 1930. He attended Bordentown High School, but did not graduate. He entered the US Navy about 1950 during the Korean Conflict and served aboard the Gearing-Class destroyer, USS John A. Boyle (DD-755) in the South Pacific. He married Eleanor Stanton June 5, 1954. They had three daughters. After the war, Bernie worked for Bordentown Laundry, driving a delivery truck for a short while. He went on to work for CFI Steel in Roebling as a plant security guard until the plant closed in the 70’s. Bernie wasn’t one to sit around for long and he went back to work driving an armored tractor trailer between New York, San Francisco, the Philadelphia Mint & Fort Knox, Kentucky carrying high-value secure cargo. The family lived on Union Avenue in Delanco before moving to Edgewater Park. Bernie died in 1997 at age 68. Eleanor died in 2012 at age 78. Benjamin Keebler | Benjamin Keebler was born November 2, 1848 in Germany. He emigrated to the United States and was a veteran of the Civil War, serving with E Co, 2nd New Hampshire Infantry and was one of three surviving veterans honored by Delanco on Memorial Day about 1920. (See photo in Delanco Archive). He married Mary E. Keebler in 1877. Ben was an honorary member of the Riverside Fire Department. He ran the old boiler room in the Keystone Watch Case Building and once saved the structure by quick work on an over-pressurized tank. His work so impressed owner, Theophilus Zurbrugg, that when Theophilus died, he left Ben $500 in his will. Ben was still listed as a veteran living in Delanco in a Veteran’s Day tribute in 1928. George Keebler | George Keebler joined the US Army and served in Keflavik Naval Air Station in Iceland during WWII. George and his wife Margaret lived at 532 Burlington Avenue in Delanco. Daniel M. Kendall | Daniel M. Kendall was born July 15, 1916. He served as a corporal in the 120th Inf, 30th Division of the US Army. He gave his life for his country on August 22, 1944 at age 28 and is buried in Beverly National Cemetery. Richard J. Ketchel | Richard J. Ketchel was born in May of 1927 in Riverside to Chester J. and Helen Ketchel. Richard enlisted in the US Navy in 1944 at age 17 to serve in WWII. He served as a radioman on the Edsall class destroyer escort USS Martin H Ray (DE-338) in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters for the duration of the war. He was in New York City for VE Day, May 8, 1945, and in San Diego for VJ Day, August 14, 1945. Richard earned a degree in drafting from Temple University. He married Rosemary Digney of the Olney section of Philadelphia in 1954; 4 children. They were married for 62 years. Richard and Rosemary started RK Metals in Riverside in 1973. Richard served as President and Rosemary as Vice President. They ran the company for 25 years until retiring in 1998. They started their family in Delanco, but moved on to Cinnaminson, Delran, Haddonfield and Charlottesville, Virginia, with a summer home in Beach Haven on Long Beach Island where they were active at Spray Beach Yacht Club, where Richard is a Past Commodore. They also enjoyed a winter residence in Hobe Beach, Florida. Rosemary died in 2006 and Richard died in 2021. Albert Kilcher | Albert Kilcher was born June 1, 1921 and grw up in Atlantic City, NJ. He played varsity ice hockey in high school. Albert served in the US Navy in WWII aboard the USS Charles R. Ware (DD-865), a Gearing-class destroyer and the USS Erickson (DD-440), he toured through Italy and North Africa. He later served in the Korean Conflict and attained the rank of Petty Officer 3rd Class. He was awarded the NJ Distinguished Service Medal. When the wars ended, his sense of exploration only grew and his travels took him through Colorado, Utah, Nevada and California. Returning to New Jersey in the late 1950's, he met and married Mary Demetoglous, and raised their daughter, Michele. Albert spent his career as a chef, working at several restaurants in the area including, the Holly House, the Rickshaw, Flo's Lakeside Tavern and the Sheraton Post. Albert was preceded in death by his wife. Charles Kimball | Charles Kimball joined the US Army and served in England. He met Louise while serving in England. She followed him back to the US after the war.
