Maurice A. Herbst, Jr. Maurice Adair Herbst, Jr. was born November 25, 1893 in Pennsylvania. He served as a cook in the US Army Trans Corps in WWI, with the rank of Pvt. After the war, he married Grace R. Stacks and settled on Holly Street in Delanco, establishing the Herbst Meat Market and Abattoir on Third Street, next to his home. Maurice died March 23, 1963 at age 69. He is buried in Beverly National Cemetery with his wife. US Army, Pvt Trans Corps Cook WWI 1893 - 1963
Steven J. Herbst Steven John Herbst was born in November of 1960, the son of Adair H. "Bud" Herbst and his wife, Rosemary; Grandson of Maurice Adair Herbst, Jr., all of Holly Street in Delanco. Steve joined the US Army after graduating high school at age 18. He trained at Fort Hood, Texas and in Germany, Steve did three tours of duty in Iraq. He was stationed in Hawaii for many years and is currently stationed at the Joint Base MDL where he serves as a vehicle mechanic. He married, and Steve and Maria moved to Edgewater Park. Stanley J. Hettinger Stanley J. Hettinger was born in Philadelphia on March 25, 1919, the son of Mary E. Hettinger. He was living on Berkshire Street in Philadelphia in 1940 at age 21. He served as a private in the US Army during WWII. Post-service, he married (1st) Dorothy J. Claeys and (2nd) Ruth M. Bilderback. He had four sons and three daughters. The family lived in Delanco for thirty plus years and in the Delanco - Riverside area for over 44 years. He was employed by RCA/Lockheed-Martin, Moorestown for 49 years, retiring as a microcircuit specialist in 1998. Later, the family lived in Oaklyn and Collingswood. He was hardworking and caring. He was also a model train enthusiast. Stanley died Saturday, July 27, 2002 at age 83 at the Virtua Memorial Hospital in Mt Holly. He is buried in Sunset Memorial Park in Feasterville, Pennsylvania. Edward J. Hinkel Edward J. Hinkel was born in Nuremburg, Germany about 1953 and became a resident of Delanco. He joined the US Army in 1974 and served until 1994, through the Vietnam War and beyond. After the war he worked at Burlington Coat Factory and Costco in Mt Laurel. He died December 4, 2018 at age 65. Burial arrangements are unknown. US Army, ? Unit? Vietnam 1953 – 2018
Robert D. Hinkle Robert D. Hinkle was born in Riverside on June 12, 1929 to the late Laura and Clarence "Pete" Hinkle. Bob graduated from Riverside High School in 1947 where he was an avid basketball and baseball player. After high school, Bob attended college for a time. His first job was with the Riverside Trust Company. He joined the U.S. Army in 1951 at age 22 and served over 28 years beginning with the Korean Conflict. Bob reports that he intended to join the U.S. Navy, but a Navy recruiter was unavailable. It was an Army recruiter who convinced him to join the U.S. Army. He did his basic training at Fort Dix, then Officers Candidate School at Ft. Benning, Georgia, and was assigned to the 179th Division in Korea. He later served in the 175th Infantry. Upon graduation he was sent to Korea and served in the 45th Infantry Division. Later in his military career he graduated from the Command and General Staff College, the Air War College, served as an instructor, and, beginning in May 1977, as Liaison Officer for South Jersey to the US Military Academy at West Point. Robert proudly served his country and retired as a Colonel in the U.S. Army separating from the service on May 9, 1983. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame at Ft. Benning. Colonel Hinkle earned the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal and the Purple Heart with a Cluster. His Silver Star citation talks of his heroism under fire, protecting his unit even as he was wounded by an enemy grenade. Bob married Joan (nee Brown) in 1954 while he was serving in the military and was happily married for 67 years. In 1964, the Hinkles moved from Delran to Peach Tree Lane in Delanco. In civilian life, Bob was employed by PSE&G Company as an Engineering Plant Supervisor. Bob and Joan have been very active in our Delanco community. He was a member of the Military Officers Association, the T.W. Daly Chapter of the Korean Veterans of South Jersey, VFW Post 3020 of Riverside, Riverside American Legion Post 294 and the Masonic Lodge #107. He enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the Burlington County Country Club for 46 years. He loved most sports and enjoyed the strategy of a good chess game. He was a lifelong member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Riverside. Bob received special recognition for his military service as the Grand Marshall of our Memorial Day Parade in 2003. Bob donated his uniform for display at the Riverside Historical Society Museum. It was later featured in Delanco's Military Salute display. Bob was interviewed by Henry Lopez of the Delanco History Board on April 18, 2018 at the young age of 88. Col. Hinkle died on July 1, 2021 at age 92 and was buried on Patton Drive, overlooking the Pentagon in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia on March 6, 2023 with full military honors. Frederick E. Hoey Fred E. Hoey was born December 4, 1919, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hoey of 418 Burlington Avenue in Delanco. The Hoey family was active at First Presbyterian Church in Delanco. Fred enlisted in the US Army on January 27, 1942 in Fort Dix and was assigned to the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division as a PFC. He married Edith Gilette Haines on November 1, 1942. He was Killed in Action in France on October 31, 1944. He was initially buried in France then repatriated and buried in Beverly National Cemetery. William L. Holt William Holt was born in Mt Holly in 1897. His family moved to Delanco in the same year. William served in the US Army during WWI and was listed on Delanco's original WWI Honor Roll. He was honored for his service during WWI on Memorial Day in 1928. US Army ? WWI 1897 –
Ignatius Francis “Ike” Horan Ignatius Francis "Ike" Horan, who often went by the nicknames "Ike" or "Nash" (pronounced NAYsh), was born in Beverly in 1920. Brother of Joseph and John Horan. Frank graduated from Riverside High School in 1938 and was a graduate of Strayer Business College. In 1942 Frank and his brother John shipped off to Pearl Harbor where they worked as civilian shipfitters, putting the decimated American fleet back in shape. Frank returned to Delanco in 1942. In 1943 he was drafted to the US Army to serve in the 802nd Army Marine Ship Repair Company in the Philippines. He attained the rank of Staff Sgt. He met and married Shirley Secor Applegate in 1947. They moved to Delanco where they lived for 35 years. Frank worked at Robins Shipyard in Delanco. He served as Delanco Tax Collector from 1966 – 1969. He also served on the School Board, Zoning Board, and Land Use Board. He served as VP of France Products Division of Colt Industries in Ft Lauderdale, FL. Frank and his brothers all suffered from asbestosis as a result of their shipyard work. Frank suffered a debilitating stroke in 1995 which confined him to a wheel chair. He died in Moorestown on February 28, 2004 at age 84 and is buried in Overlook Cemetery, Bridgeton NJ. US Army, MSgt ? WWII, Philippines 1920 -2004
John S. Horan John S. Horan was the brother of Frank and Joseph Horan. John was a veteran of WWI serving with Frank in Pearl Harbor. Edward Horn Edward Horn: Edward Horn was born about 1945. He graduated Riverside High School in 1963. He was a part of the 1961 State Championship Football team that was inducted into the Riverside Athletic Hall of Fame. After high school, Ed joined the U.S. Coast Guard, where he served for four years. He earned his Associate Degree at Burlington County College. He worked for Delanco Public Works for 35 years, never taking a sick day. He and his wife, Patricia and children Brian and Leah enjoyed camping in Maine and Pennsylvania, and when the crowds cleared after the summer, they headed to Avalon when it was most quiet. Ed was a lifelong learner. His goal was to go back to school to get his degree, which he accomplished by graduating from Rowan University Summa Cum Laude. He was humble and kind, always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Ed died in February of 2023 at age 77. USCG ? ? 1945 - 2023
Maurice Horn Maurice Horn, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Horn of Delanco entered the service during WWII. He was wounded in action in France and hospitalized in England for four months before being transferred to Oliver General Hospital in Augusta, Georgia. Arthur L. Horner Arthur L. Horner was born in 1880. He served in H Co. 4th Regiment NJ Infantry. Not clear which conflict. After the war he entered the ministry. He married M. Alice. He died February 11, 1933 at age 52. Alice Died in 1934. Both are buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Burlington. US Army H Co 4th Ref NJ Inf unclear 1880 - 1933
John U. Horner John U. Horner, formerly of Delanco was born in 1917. He joined the US Marine Corps and served in WWII. He attained the rank of First Sergeant. John was Killed in Action March 3, 1945 on Iwo Jima. It was noted he was the second son in his family to be killed in action. USMC 1 SGT WWII SW Pacific Iwo Jima 1917 - 1945 KIA
William T. "Bill" Horton, Jr. William Thomas "Bill" Horton, Jr. was born May 14, 1942 in Riverside to William and Ruth Horton, Sr. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1962 at age 20, just after the Korean Conflict and served aboard the Fletcher-Class destroyer, USS Twining (DD-540). At this time, the Twining was doing patrol-duty in the southwestern Pacific and off the West Coast of the US. Later in her service, the Twining served as a training ship. Bill served until August 30, 1967. He married Janet Blinn Horton in March of 1970. Son: Eric William Horton. They moved to Edgewood Avenue in Delanco in 1972. Bill earned a Masters Degree and taught Industrial Arts in Haddon Township. He also was elected to the Delanco School Board in 1984. Bill died May 5, 1984 at age 42. Robert E. Hozier Robert E. Hozier was was listed on the original Delanco WW II Honor Roll. He was born October 13, 1921. He served in the US Marine Corps during WWII achieving the rank of Tec Sergeant. He married Dorothy (nee Stiltz). Robert was a resident of Moorestown for 40 years and had worked for KSM Co in Moorestown which became Erico before his retirement in 1991 after 37 years of service. Robert was an active member of the Masonville United Methodist Church in Mt Laurel and served in many capacities such as Treasurer, Chairman of Trustees and member of the Finance Committee and serves as a lay member of the Conference. Robert died July 27, 2002 at JFK Hospital in Cherry Hill at the age of 80. He is buried in William Doyle NJ Veterans Cemetery in Arneytown. ? ? WWII 1921 - 2002
