Charles F. Weinman | Charles F. Weinman was born in the Tacony Section of Philadelphia in 1918. He joined the US Navy in WWII and served aboard the USS Clemson (DD-186) in the Pacific. The Clemson was a reconverted destroyer that had served in the Battle of the Atlantic during World War II. In 1944, the ship was converted into a high speed transport and transferred to the Pacific taking part in several invasions. After the service, Charles married Ann J. Curcurito in 1943 and moved to Third Street in Delanco in 1951. After the war Charles had a long career with NJ Bell Telephone, retiring in 1980 as a Senior Switchman. William C.V. Wells | William C.V. Wells, Sr.(?) was the brother-in-law of Frank Lester Toy. William served in the US Army during WWI. He appears to have earned his MD from Hannemann Hospital in 1920 and was a well-loved physician in Delanco. He had his home at the corner of Cedar and Vine. Dr. Wells was listed on Delanco's original WWI Honor Roll. A July 1943 news article decries the availabilty pf physicians i the Delanco/Riverside area because Dr. Wells joined the military, suggesting that he also served in WWII. | US Army | Army Ned Corps? Oliver White | Oliver White was a resident of Delanco; Uncle to Richard Oliver and Robert Thomas White. Oliver served as a tank commander in the US Army during WWII. Richard O. White | Richard Oliver "Whitey" White was born in Camden to Dorothy White in February of 1953; brother of Robert A. White; nephew of Oliver White. He lived on Delview Lane in Delanco, attended local schools and graduated from Riverside High School. Prior to his military service, Richard worked for Cook and Bowers Candies. Richard joined the armed forces in March 1971 and served as a Structures Technition in the USAF during the Vietnam conflict. He was stationed in Thailand where he met and married Sue White in 1974. He also served in Okinawa and Guam. His service was extended at the request of the government and he later served at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota; for 20 years of service before leaving the service with the rank of Master Sergeant in March 1991. He received many commendations, including the Air Force Commendation Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters; NCO PME Ribbon; Small Arms Expert Marksman/Rifle; Air Force Longevity Service Award with four Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters; National Defense Service Medal; Air Force Training Ribbon; Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal w/Device. Allen Wickward | Allen Wickward was born in Burlington, the son of Sadie Wickward and brother of Carlton Wickward. He attended James Lawrence School in Burlington and was employed by Kierkhefer Container Corporation in Delair prior to WWII. His family moved to Delanco. Allen joined the US Army during WWII and attained the rank of SGT. He was reported missing in action in Germany, but returned to his unit. James Robert “Bobby” Willard | J. Robert Willard was born January 1, 1912 in Delanco NJ, the son of Joseph Aaron and Mary Jane Hansbury Willard. He graduated Burlington High School in 1929. He never married. He worked for United Container Corporation in Philadelphia before joining the US Merchant Marine on April 15, 1942. He engaged in Philadelphia as an Ordinary Seaman for the crew of the American vessel S.S. Agwidale. The vesseal was to sail to Murmansk, but was redirected to Edinburgh, Scotland. In the return trip, the ship was rammed, but managed to limp into Newfoundland and was laid up for repairs. Bobby was listed on the ship's return manifest arriving in New York, New York on August 29, 1942 from the port of Edinburgh, Scotland via St. John's Newfoundland as age 30, male, race American, nationality USA, able to read and scheduled to be discharged at arriving port. He engaged with a new freighter, a Liberty Ship, the S.S. Arthur Middleton, which sailed from New York on December 12, 1942, in a convoy of 44 vessels and 7 US destroyers, with a cargo of munitions and explosives bound for North Africa. His ship was torpedoed by German U-Boat (U-73) (Deckert) on January 1, 1943 about 3 miles outside of Oran, Algeria with only 3 survivors. Bobby was classified lost at sea. The Willards erected a memorial to him in Monument Cemetery. The inscription reads: “WILLARD/ IN MEMORY OF OUR/ BELOVED SON/ JAMES R./ BORN JAN 1, 1912/ DIED JAN 1, 1943/ LOST AT SEA". Roland F. Willis, Jr. | Roland Fletcher Willis, Jr. was born September 25, 1925. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1951. He was a Sgt in the 18th Infantry Div, the "Big Red One" in Germany. He served until 1951. His family was active at Dobbins Memorial Church in Delanco. Roland died January 3, 2004 at age 78. Howard Wills, Jr. | Howard Wills, Jr. was born on Dcember 29, 1924 to Howard and Agnes A. Barr Wills, Sr.The family was living at 212 Rancocas Avenue in Delanco during the depression, however, they were living behind the Wills Farm Market on Route 130 North in Delran in 1940. Howard joined the US Army Air Forces, graduated from airplane mechanics school at Roosevelt Field, New York. He served as a tailgunner on a B-17 during WWII. He flew 50 successful missions, but the plane was was shot down on his 51st mission. After the war, Howard served as a mailman in Delanco for many years. Israel Putnam Heisler Wilmerton | Israel Putnam Wilmerton was born on August 16, 1839. Sometimes known as Isaac P.H. Wilmerton or informally known as Putnam or just Put to his friends in Delanco, he was a close friend of Martha Fletcher, who frequently mentioned him in her diary. He was not listed in his father’s household in the Delanco 1860 Census. He served in the US Army in the Civil War. He married Hannah Stokes Yerkes in 1965. Put died March 21, 1914 at age 74.
