Rudolph Stotz Rudolph "Rudy" Stotz was born on September 26, 1917 in Philadelphia to August Carl Stotz and Sarah Ann Morrow Stotz of German and Scotish ancestry. He spent his early life on Pierce Street in Philadelphia. After graduating high school in 1935, he worked as an acetylene burner and welder for Morris & Wheeler in Philadelphia until July 1943. He joined the US Navy during WWII, trained at US Naval Training Center Sampson and served from July 29, 1943 until July 7, 1946 aboard the USS Harris (ATA-2), a Harris-Class Attack Transport in the North and Southwest Pacific. His ship saw action in Kiska, Alaska supported many invasions in the Southwestern Pacific, including Tarawa, Kwajalein Atoll, Saipan in the Marianas, Palau Island, Leyte Gulf in the Philippines, Guam, and Okinawa, Japan, earning 10 battle Ribbons. Rudy received the Pacific Theater ribbon with 5 stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 stars, American Theater Ribbon and Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged with the grade of Fireman 1st Class. After the war, Rudy returned to Morris and Wheeler, retiring as Welding Foreman. He married Florence "Sis"Marter Clapper in Beverly Presbyterian Church and they settled on 329 Willow Street in Delanco on September 15, 1954. He remained in Delanco for the rest of his life. Rudy served for many years as assistant scoutmaster for Delanco Troop 19 of the BSA. He died on July 24, 1987 at age 69. He was cremated and his brother-in-laws George Fields & Richard Marter spread his ashes in the Atlantic Ocean. Robert R. Stout, Sr. Robert R. Stout, Sr. was born November 10, 1927 in Elkins Park Pennsylvania. That is where he met Marie E. Roberts as a teenager. Bob enlisted in the US Army and became a sharp shooter, serving during both WWII and Korea. He attained the rank of Corporal. He married Marie in 1952. When Bob was discharged in 1954, they moved to Delanco and raised four children here. Marie died in 2007 and Bob died August 8, 2011 at age 83. Cecil F. Sundermier Cecil F. Sundermier was born in Riverside on September 16, 1917 to Grover and Marcella Sundermier; brother of Paul Sundermier. The family lived on Rancocas Avenue in Delanco in 1940. Cecil enlisted in the US Army on June 9, 1941 in Trenton New Jersey and served in WWII attaining the rank of TEC 5. He married Helen George of Cinnaminson; Two sons. In later years they lived in Riverton. Cecil died on January 16, 1999 at age 81. Helen died in July 1999. Both are buried in Brig Gen Wm C Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Arneytown. Cecil was listed on the original Delanco WW II Honor Roll. US Army CPL Tech 5 ? WWII Panama Canal, Hawaii 1917 - 1999
Paul Sundermier Paul Sundermier was born in Riverside on December 18, 1922 to Grover and Marcella Sundermier; brother of Cecil Sundermier. The family lived on Rancocas Avenue in Delanco in 1940. Paul joined the US Army Air Corps during WWII and served in the 54th Troop Carrier Squadron. He received the Soldier's Medal for saving lives in an airplane crash in the Alaskan wilderness. After the war, he lived in Bridgeboro, where he raised his family with Genevieve, his wife of forty-seven years, He worked as a machinist on the early space program and later retired from the Campbell Soup Company, Moorestown, NJ. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Delran and had been a volunteer firefighter with the Delran Twp. F.D. Genieve died in 1992. Paul moved to Las Cruces and lived for many years with his daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Mike Lieberman. Paul passed away on Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at age 85. A memorial service and interment was held at the Brig. General Wm. C. Doyle Veteran's Cemetery Chapel, Arneytown, NJ. Paul was listed on the original Delanco WW II Honor Roll. Jose M. Talavera-Toso III Jose M. Talavera-Toso-III was born in Lima, Peru on April 27, 1948 and emigrated to the US at age 13. In 1965, at age 17, he volunteered for the US Army and served for three tours of duty in Vietnam as well as service in the Dominican Republic. He was highly-decorated: Awarded a Bronze Star with Valor, Combat Infantryman, Air Medal and 3 Purple Hearts. He was proud to have earned his citizenship through his service to the United States. In 1972, Jose began a long service with the US Census Bureau. He met Dorothy Robbins of Delanco who was also in government service when both of them were working for the White House. He married her in 1973. Jose also worked long and hard for services to homeless veterans, likely because of his own long-term effects of PTSD and Agent Orange. His family moved to the Robbins family riverbank home in Delanco in 2004. Jose died of the long-term effects of Agent Orange on December 6, 2013. He is buried in Brigadier General William C. Kenneth R. Tevis Kenneth Reeve Tevis was born in Delanco July 14, 1929, a son of Lloyd and Pearl Reeve Tevis. Ken enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served honorably during the Korean War. He married Theresa about 1953. Ken was a licensed private pilot and enjoyed traveling the country in his R.V. and traveling abroad. He was also a boating enthusiast. Ken retired from the electronics industry in 1994 and moved to the Fort Myers area. He began golfing and shooting pool with his buddies. Ken died July 19, 2011, at Hope Hospice South in Fort Myers. Harold Tieman Harold Tieman was born December 26, 1907. He served in the US Navy during WWI on the USS Camden (AOE-2), a fast combat support ship, as a Fireman 2nd Class. He held ratings as AS, F3cF2 until his discharge September 20, 1928. Harold married Mary Pacevick in 1928. Harold and Mary lived on Ash Street in Delanco and ran a filling station next door on Burlington Avenue at Union. Harold and Mary were the parents of Harold, William, and James Tieman. William E. Tieman William Edward Tieman was born on March 30, 1948, to Harold and Mary Tieman of Delanco and brother of Harold, Gary, and James Tieman. Bill attended Riverside High School and graduated in June 1967. Bill was on the Varsity Football and Wrestling Teams and lettered in both sports. After graduation, he went to work for Kaiser Gypsum Co. Inc. in Delanco. Bill was drafted into the US Army on March 6, 1967. He received basic training at Fort Dix and further instruction at Fort Polk, PA.— He was sent to Vietnam on August 1, 1967. He attained the rank of Specialist Four (E4) and was certified as an expert rifleman. Bill served with Company B, 3rd Battalion, 39th Infantry, and 9th Infantry Divisions. He was wounded in action in November 1967. He was killed in action on January 8, 1968 and is buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Burlington, NJ. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart. Prior to his death, Bill had been awarded the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, and Combat Infantryman Badge. W. Ira “Ike” Tolson W. Ira “Ike” Tolson is listed on the original Delanco WW II Honor Roll. Ike was a member of the Delanco Male Chorus, which performed public concerts throughout the area and on radio broadcasts in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. He was reported to live at 501 Ash Street. A street is named for him in the Crossings housing development. Ike is remembered by Delanco youth as one of the chaperones of Delanco Civic Center activities at Walnut Street School. ? ? WWII ?
John J. Towell John J. Towell was born in Brooklyn New York in 1951. He moved to Willingboro with his family in 1964. He graduated from high school in 1969. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps and attained the rank of Lance Corporal when he was honorably discharged in 1975. He went on to work for the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. He advanced from Marine Machinist Apprentice through Project Manager and retired when the yard closed in 1995. He Married Barbara Anderson Fritz in 1981. He went on to serve as Production Manager for Evers International. John became a Fire Police Officer in Delanco in 1997. He obtained his EMT certification and served as an EMT, serving as President from 2001 – 2006. John died in 2008 and is buried in Brig Gen Wm C Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown. Frank E. Toy Frank E. Toy was born in 1867. He married Frances J. Litle in 1890; Parernts of Frank Lester Toy. Frank established Lytle & Toy Grocery on Vine Street at Buttonwood in 1905. When WWI broke out, Frank left the store to become a shipbuilder at Cramps Shipyard in Philadelphia. Frank died in 1950 at age 83 and is buried in Monument Cemetery in Beverly. Frank Lester Toy Frank Lester Toy was the son of Frank E. and Frances J. Litle Toy of Delanco. He was the husband of Lidie. Lester served in the US Army during WWI. When he returned to Delanco from the service, he joined the Washington Fire Co., serving as Fire Chief in 1917 and 1918. The Toys lived on the SW corner of Hazel and 3rd. Lester died in 1949 and was buried in Lakeview Memorial Park in Cinnaminson. He was listed on Delanco's original WWI Honor Roll and honored for his service during WWI on Memorial Day in 1928. George S. Treusch George S. Treusch was born on January 23, 1927. He lived in Beverly and graduated Burlington High School until 1945. He joined the US Army on March 14, 1945 and served until December 19, 1946. He was assigned to the 3469th Ordinance Co, rated a Tech-4 driving heavy equipment in the Philippines. After the war he went to work for Wall Rope in Beverly until his retirement about 1987. He moved to Delanco in 1987 and lived on Oakford Ave until he died on April 4, 1993. Father of Kitty Martin.
