Robert D. Hinkle Robert D. Hinkle was born in Riverside on June 12, 1929 to the late Laura and Clarence "Pete" Hinkle. Bob graduated from Riverside High School in 1947 where he was an avid basketball and baseball player. After high school, Bob attended college for a time. His first job was with the Riverside Trust Company. He joined the U.S. Army in 1951 at age 22 and served over 28 years beginning with the Korean Conflict. Bob reports that he intended to join the U.S. Navy, but a Navy recruiter was unavailable. It was an Army recruiter who convinced him to join the U.S. Army. He did his basic training at Fort Dix, then Officers Candidate School at Ft. Benning, Georgia, and was assigned to the 179th Division in Korea. He later served in the 175th Infantry. Upon graduation he was sent to Korea and served in the 45th Infantry Division. Later in his military career he graduated from the Command and General Staff College, the Air War College, served as an instructor, and, beginning in May 1977, as Liaison Officer for South Jersey to the US Military Academy at West Point. Robert proudly served his country and retired as a Colonel in the U.S. Army separating from the service on May 9, 1983. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame at Ft. Benning. Colonel Hinkle earned the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal and the Purple Heart with a Cluster. His Silver Star citation talks of his heroism under fire, protecting his unit even as he was wounded by an enemy grenade. Bob married Joan (nee Brown) in 1954 while he was serving in the military and was happily married for 67 years. In 1964, the Hinkles moved from Delran to Peach Tree Lane in Delanco. In civilian life, Bob was employed by PSE&G Company as an Engineering Plant Supervisor. Bob and Joan have been very active in our Delanco community. He was a member of the Military Officers Association, the T.W. Daly Chapter of the Korean Veterans of South Jersey, VFW Post 3020 of Riverside, Riverside American Legion Post 294 and the Masonic Lodge #107. He enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the Burlington County Country Club for 46 years. He loved most sports and enjoyed the strategy of a good chess game. He was a lifelong member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Riverside. Bob received special recognition for his military service as the Grand Marshall of our Memorial Day Parade in 2003. Bob donated his uniform for display at the Riverside Historical Society Museum. It was later featured in Delanco's Military Salute display. Bob was interviewed by Henry Lopez of the Delanco History Board on April 18, 2018 at the young age of 88. Col. Hinkle died on July 1, 2021 at age 92 and was buried on Patton Drive, overlooking the Pentagon in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia on March 6, 2023 with full military honors. William T. "Bill" Horton, Jr. William Thomas "Bill" Horton, Jr. was born May 14, 1942 in Riverside to William and Ruth Horton, Sr. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1962 at age 20, just after the Korean Conflict and served aboard the Fletcher-Class destroyer, USS Twining (DD-540). At this time, the Twining was doing patrol-duty in the southwestern Pacific and off the West Coast of the US. Later in her service, the Twining served as a training ship. Bill served until August 30, 1967. He married Janet Blinn Horton in March of 1970. Son: Eric William Horton. They moved to Edgewood Avenue in Delanco in 1972. Bill earned a Masters Degree and taught Industrial Arts in Haddon Township. He also was elected to the Delanco School Board in 1984. Bill died May 5, 1984 at age 42. Edward C. Hutchinson Edward C. Hutchinson was born September 12, 1930. He served in the US Army in Korea, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He died December 2, 2003 and is buried in Gen. William C. Doyle Cemetery in Arneytown. ? ? Korea 1930 - 2003

Bernard F. Keating Bernard F. "Bernie" Keating was born at home in Bordentown on October 18, 1930. He attended Bordentown High School, but did not graduate. He entered the US Navy about 1950 during the Korean Conflict and served aboard the Gearing-Class destroyer, USS John A. Boyle (DD-755) in the South Pacific. He married Eleanor Stanton June 5, 1954. They had three daughters. After the war, Bernie worked for Bordentown Laundry, driving a delivery truck for a short while. He went on to work for CFI Steel in Roebling as a plant security guard until the plant closed in the 70’s. Bernie wasn’t one to sit around for long and he went back to work driving an armored tractor trailer between New York, San Francisco, the Philadelphia Mint & Fort Knox, Kentucky carrying high-value secure cargo. The family lived on Union Avenue in Delanco before moving to Edgewater Park. Bernie died in 1997 at age 68. Eleanor died in 2012 at age 78. Both are buried in St Mary’s Cemetery in Bordentown. Albert Kilcher Albert Kilcher was born June 1, 1921 and grw up in Atlantic City, NJ. He played varsity ice hockey in high school. Albert served in the US Navy in WWII aboard the USS Charles R. Ware (DD-865), a Gearing-class destroyer and the USS Erickson (DD-440), he toured through Italy and North Africa. He later served in the Korean Conflict and attained the rank of Petty Officer 3rd Class. He was awarded the NJ Distinguished Service Medal. When the wars ended, his sense of exploration only grew and his travels took him through Colorado, Utah, Nevada and California. Returning to New Jersey in the late 1950's, he met and married Mary Demetoglous, and raised their daughter, Michele. Albert spent his career as a chef, working at several restaurants in the area including, the Holly House, the Rickshaw, Flo's Lakeside Tavern and the Sheraton Post. Albert was preceded in death by his wife. He died Febryuary 26, 2010 at age 88 and is buried in Lakeview Memorial Park. George Cornell Krusen II George Cornell Krusen II was born on August 5, 1928 to George Elliott and Grace Kimball Krusen in Philadelphia. Brother of Jon Falan Krusen. Within days, the family moved to 617 Delaware Avenue in Delanco. The family lived there six years from 1928 to 1934, moving to Riverton in 1934, then returning to the family "compound" at 1117 Delaware in Delanco in 1941. George Attended Westfield Friends School, then Moorestown Friends School, graduating in 1946. He graduated from MIT in 1950 and earned his Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Cornell in 1952. He joined the US Army Chemical Corps through the Army ROTC in July 1952, training at Camp McClellan in Alabama. He was assigned to the Dugway Proving Grounds and served until 1954, attaining the rank of 1st Lieutenant. After the war he worked for a series of chemical companies. He married Betsey Goodrich Malan on February 2, 1957. About 1959, they purchased a farm outside of Boxborough Massachusetts. Betsey died June 4, 2012. Gordon Malan Krusen Gordon Malan Krusen was born June 25, 1931, the son of Leslie Conard and Kathryn Malan Krusen, Sr., then of 110 Oakford Ave, Delanco; Brother of Leslie “Pete” Conard Krusen and George Cornell Krusen II. Gordon grew up in Delanco and engaged in all the local activities. He was an earnest sailor, competing in duster, comet, thistle class and catboat races at Red Dragon Canoe Club and elsewhere. Gordon matriculated to the University of Virginia from 1949 and graduated in 1953. He enrolled in Navy ROTC training from 1950 – 1953. He was commissioned as an Ensign and assigned to the USS New Jersey in 1953. He sailed to Europe and the Mediterranean, then cruised to the Pacific and participated in the shore bombardment of North Korea. Gordon married (1st) Sally B. Shipman and (2nd) Susan B. Cole. They were living in Old Lyme, Connecticut until Gordon died on June 2, 2021. He is buried in Eight Mile River Cemetery in Lyme, Connecticut. US Navy, Ens Unit? Charles "Chuck" Maerten III Charles "Chuck" Maerten III was born May 1, 1937 in Delanco to Charles and Marie Josephine "Micky" Zimmermann Maerten, Jr. Chuck lived at 218 Walter in Delanco, but only until November 1, 1939 when his family moved to Palmyra. He returned many times to vacation with relatives. Chuck entered the US Air Force on July 22, 1954 at age 17, just a few days before the end of the Korean conflict. He served through the Vietnam War until September 30, 1976. He trained in communications, specializing in Morse code, Supervisor of Radio Operations. He trained at Sampson AFB New York and in Mississippi, then served in Japan, Ramstein AB Germany, Andrews AFB Maryland, Sondrestrom AB Greenland, Beale AFB California, Eglin AFB Florida, Nakhom Phanom AB Thailand, and Elmendorf AFB Alaska. He ended his military career at the USAF Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He served in15 different training and communications units over the years. He attained the rank of E-6, having earned the USAF Commendation Medal three times and the Meritorious Service Medal. He married Annegret (Ann) Harr. After his military service, Chuck served as Beer Manager for the largest retailer in Colorado Springs, then as Inventory Control Manager for his local Budweiser distributor. From 1998 until 2012 he worked as an over-the-road driver for Liberty Toyota. He retired completely in 2012 and currently lives in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Joseph N. Matera Joseph Matera was born in May of 1932, raised in Riverside, and was a 1951 graduate of Riverside High School. He excelled at football, basketball and baseball and was proud to be inducted into the Riverside Sports Hall of Fame. He joined the US Army and served in Korea for several years. On his return from Korea, Joe went to work for the Pennsylvania Railroad. It was there that he first spotted Elsie Jamison. They were married in 1956 and settled on Main Street in Riverton where they raised their four children. Joe went to school at Wharton on the GI Bill, studying business and real estate. In 1971, he retired from the railroad and opened Matera Real Estate in the front room of their home in Riverside. Elsie was Joe's "right arm" and they took great pride in their "mom and pop" operation. In 1979, they bought investment property in Ocean City, which became a second hub of friends and activities. in 1989, Joe and Elsie moved their business up on Main Street and moved to Delanco. They remained parishioners of Sacred Heart Church in Riverton. Elsie died in 2007. Joe died April 8, 2022 in Riverton, just weeks before his 90th birthday. They are buried in Lakeview Memorial Park in Cinnaminson. US Army ? Korea 1933 - 2022
Ralph L. McCullough Ralph Lehre McCullough was born May 19, 1928. The family lived at 308 Buttonwood Ave in Delanco. Ralph served as a PFC in the US Army in Europe during the Korean Conflict. After the war, Ralph was employed by Rohm & Haas in Bristol Pennsylvania from 1953 until he retired in 1990; 37 years. Ralph joined Washington Fire Co No 1 in 1944 and became a Life Member, serving over 60 years. Ralph was considered Washington Fire Co No 1’s Historian. The family was active in 1st Presbyterian Church in Delanco. Ralph died October 20, 2008 at age 80 and was buried in Lakeview Memorial Park in Cinnaminson. US Army, PFC Unit? James C. McDougall James Clark McDougall was born in Delanco on October 30, 1928, the son of Robert R. and Frances Kelly McDougal, Jr.; sibling of Vernon "Bud" McDougaL He was a lifelong resident of Delanco. He knew the town well, having served as a paperboy for several publications. He joined the US Navy November 19. 1951 during the Korean Conflict and served as a Communications TECnician 3rd grade. He was discharged November 10, 1955. When he returned to Delanco he went to work for the railroad as a signal operator. He later became a self-employed hardware salesman until his retirement. He married (1st) Dolores, then (2nd) Dorothy Myers. They lived on Willow Street then moved to 100 Creek Road. They were active in 1st Presbyterian Church. Jim was a member of the Beverly/ Riverside Masonic Lodge #170 F. and A.M., the Consistory, the Crescent Shrine and the Delanco Senior Citizens Club. Jim died at home on December 30, 2017 at age 89. Russell E. Mitchell, Sr. Russell E. Mitchell, Sr. was born in 1928. He joined the US Navy February 1, 1946 and served as a Mailman 3rd Class. He was discharged December 30, 1947. He earned the WWII Victory Medal. He rejoined the US Navy October 4, 1950 during the Korean Conflict and he served until January 10, 1952. He died in 2007. Harvey D. Moritz Harvey D. Moritz was born in 1934 in Moorestown. He was a graduate of Burlington City High School. He joined the Air Force in 1952 and served in Alaska as a radioman during the Korean Conflict. When he left the service in 1957, he married Georgeann "Georgie" Eberly and moved to Delanco. He went to work for the US Postal Service in 1958. He served in Pemberton, Riverside, Delran, then Delanco for 18 years. He was named NJ Postmaster of the Year in 1981. Harvey was recruited by the Postmaster General to come to Washington DC and serve in the national headquarters, a position he held for a year. He was elected Vice President of the National League of Postmasters. Harvey was a man of great faith, a member of Dobbins Memorial United Methodist Church, where he served on the finance committee and administrative board and was a member of the Methodist Men. He also was a former member of the Riverside, Delran and Delanco Lions Club and the United Way. Harvey was a former Coach of the Delanco Spartans Football Club. He was elected Delanco Twp. Committeeman. Harvey was a Semi-Pro Wrestler along with his late father-in-law, George Eberly. He built an outdoor ring on his property on Second Street at Orchard Avenue. Richard M. “Dick” Mueller Richard Millard "Dick" Mueller was born February 6, 1937. He joined the US Navy October 25, 1954 right after the Korean Conflict and served eight years until October 24, 1962. He served actively aboard the USS McCaffrey (DD-860), a Gearing-class destroyer. traveling to Europe, Asia, South America and the Caribbean. In January of 1958 he transferred to the US Naval Reserve assigned to the US Naval Station in Newport Rhode Island. He attained the rank of Quartermaster 3rd grade. He married Cathy and raised his family on Edwards Avenue in Delanco. After his discharge, Dick went to work for Sunoco, where he worked until he retired. Dick and Cathy were very active in Delanco. Dick was elected to the Township Committee and served as Mayor. Cathy served on the Board of Elections. Dick was responsible for founding the Delanco Cultural Athletic Club, Delanco Youth Sports Association. He created Delanco’s tradition of celebrating Babe Ruth Day in the 1970s. He ended his long career of public service in 1997 and the Muellers retired to Florida. Cathy died in 2014. Dick was guest of honor when the Mueller Pavilion at Delanco's Field of Dreams was dedicated in 2015. Dick returned to Florida and died September 20, 2015 at age 78. Michael A. Onori, Jr. Michael A. Onori, Jr. was born in Riverside on December 23, 1952. He married Dorothy of Burlington Township. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict attaining the rank of PFC. He was a painter during his lifetime and worked at various locations. He was a member of the Burlington City Exempt Firemen's Assoc. and of the Young America Ladder #3 of Burlington. Michael died May 24, 2008 at age 55 and is buried in Brig Gen Wm C Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Arneytown. US Army, PFC Unit? Korea 1952 – 2008
David K. Osmond, Sr. David K. Osmond, Sr. was born in Riverside on October 12, 1919 to Lewis and Lillian Osmond of Delanco. He attended local Delanco schools and graduated Burlington City High School about 1936. He married Grace Herbst of Delanco in First Presbyterian Church, April 19, 1942; Children: David and Dean. The family lived in several homes in Delanco over the years. David’s family reports that he was probably the first of Delanco’s sons to be drafted into WWII, entering in April of 1943. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps for three years as an Army Aviator for the 668 Artillery Battalion. He earned the rank of 1st Lieutenant by the time of his discharge in February 1946. He earned the Asiatic Pacific Theater and American Theater Campaign Ribbons, WWII Victory Medal and American Defense Medal. David worked in the family printing business for a while, then went to work for the US Post Office, eventually serving as Postmaster in Delanco and Riverside. David was called back to serve in the US Army in January 1951 for the Korean Conflict and served as a liaison pilot with the 555th Field Artillery Battalion as a forward spotter. His plane went down in Korea, though he survived. Dave served until April 1953 with the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He earned an Air Medal, Korean Service Medal, 1st UN Counter-Offensive Ribbon, and CCF Spring Offensive Ribbon. Dave's family lived in several locations in Delanco: 700 Chestnut Street, 101 Willow Street, and finally Maple Street. When David returned from Korea, he returned to work for the US Post Office, eventually serving as Postmaster in Riverside.David and Grace retired to Venice, Florida. David died Oct. 10, 2010 in Venice at age 90. Interment was at Sarasota National Cemetery in Florida. Biagio L. Passione Biagio "Ben" Louis Passione was born in Brooklyn, NY to Ciro and Catherina Passione on January 16, 1932. He loved sports as a boy, especially baseball. Ben joined the US Army in 1953 and served honorably as a radioman during the Korean Conflict, earning the rank of Corporal prior to his discharge in 1955. After the service, Ben worked as a technical writer for RCA at their Cherry Hill and Camden locations. During his career, he enjoyed traveling the world to facilities in places such as Greenland, Morocco and Germany. He married Dorothy Jeanne Nicholas on July 28, 1962 and they raised their children and step-children on Burlington Avenue in Delanco. Ben was very active in Delanco as a baseball and basketball coach. He became loyal fan to the Mets NY Mets fan after their origination in 1962. He was also deeply involved in St. Joseph's Church in Beverly and loved coaching CYO Basketball. He played golf and bowled with his RCA coworkers.until he retired from RCA after 32 years..He also enjoyed doing word puzzles and Sudoku at home. Ben passed away at the Samaritan Center in Voorhees on Sunday, January 1, 2023 at age 91 and was buried in Odd Fellows Cemetary in Burlington. US Army Cpl Radioman Korea 1932 - 2023
Edward A. Reynolds Edward Albe Reynolds was born February 18, 1931 in Orland PA. He graduated high school in Erdenheim Pennsylvania in 1949. Ed joined the US Army on January 19, 1949 and graduated from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1973, training as an artillery specialist. He graduated from the Command and General Staff College. He served in both Germany and Korea retiring with the rank of Colonel. After his service, his work took him to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania where he became active with the VFW. He married Margaret and has three daughters: Cheryl, Debbie and Robin.. He lived in Burlington City, then moved to Delanco in 1955 and lived at 532 Burlington Avenue in Delanco. Ed became very active in Washington Fire Co No 1 and served as Fire Chief, Emergency Management Coordinator at the township and county level. He was certified as an Emergency Management Coordinator, a Fire Fighter Level Three, Hazardous Materials Technician and an Adult Educator in the State of New Jersey. He has served as an instructor at the Fire, EMS, and Police Academy and is considered a Nuclear Weapons Specialist. He served as a researcher for The Delanco Story (1976). Col. Charles G. “Rick” Rickards Charles Grant "Rick" Rickards was born July 25, 1930 in Chestnut Hill Hospital in Philadelphia. He moved with his family to 230 Union Avenue, Delanco in 1948. Rick joined the US Air Force reserves on December 20, 1950 and served intil 1958 during the Korean Conflict. His specialty was the weather department and he served all eight years at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey with the rank of Private. He married Veronica "Ronnie" in October of 1957. After the service, Rick served as a mail carrier for a year, then became the first delivery driver for Drink-a-Toast Company in 1953. He also ran Rick's Sign business in Delanco. The family enjoyed travel and summer trips to Brant Beach on Long Beach Island. Ronnie died in 2016. Rick passed away in Delran on March 25, 2023 at the age of 92. USAF Res Pvt ?
