Oliver E. Ringer | Oliver E. Ringer was born in 1912 in Bavaria, Kansas. He joined the US Navy on June 3, 1930 in peacetime, but served through WWII and the Korean Conflict. He served in the Pacific aboard the USS Texas until 1936, then sailed to China aboard the USS Pecos, followed by the USS Baker and USS JD Edwards. He was aboard the USS Chester when it entered Pearl Harbor shortly after the attack, December 1941. He also served on the USS Sarsfield and USS McCalla, among others. He was later transferred to the USS Cabot in Okinawa in support of a pending attack on Japan which never took place. Oliver served until 1953, attaining the rank of Chief Petty Officer/Boatswain’s Mate. After discharge he married Dora Koppen and lived on Lilac Lane in Delanco. He transferred to Fleet Reserve in March 1953 and retired June 1, 1960 after 30 years of active and reserve service. Oliver moved to Ellsworth in 1971. He married (2nd) Pearl Black Hudson in 1972. Donald R. Schwartz, Sr. | Donald Richard Schwartz, Sr. was born in Beverly on March 20, 1937. He served honorably in the US Navy, probably during the Korean Conflict. Don worked for his father, Joe Schwartz at Holiday Lake in Delanco in the late 1950s and early 1960s. In July of 1962, Joe died suddenly and Don was asked to step in as manager. Don managed the lake until 1972. Don also owned Tom’s Steaks in Edgewater Park. He lived in Riverside for most of his life. Don later moved to Hollywood, then Westminster, Orange Co, California to live with his son, Don died on December 13, 2017 at home. Howard B. Scott | Howard B. Scott was born December 4, 1927 in Pennsylvania to N. Budd and Ida Steinmann Scott. Brother of George C. Scott. When Howard was 16, he lied about his age in order to join the US Navy. WWII was winding down and he felt he was missing an opportunity to see combat. Instead he signed on to an Antarctic Expedition with Admiral Byrd. He returned to the US Navy during the Korean Conflict and served on the USS Pine Island (AV-12), a Currituck-class seaplane tender, is the only ship of the United States Navy to hold this name. He married Ruth and lived in Delran. In later years, he became a tireless volunteer for the USS New Jersey (BB-62) when it opened to visitors in Camden NJ. Robert R. Stout, Sr. | Robert R. Stout, Sr. was born November 10, 1927 in Elkins Park Pennsylvania. That is where he met Marie E. Roberts as a teenager. Bob enlisted in the US Army and became a sharp shooter, serving during both WWII and Korea. He attained the rank of Corporal. He married Marie in 1952. When Bob was discharged in 1954, they moved to Delanco and raised four children here. Marie died in 2007 and Bob died August 8, 2011 at age 83. Kenneth R. Tevis | Kenneth Reeve Tevis was born in Delanco July 14, 1929, a son of Lloyd and Pearl Reeve Tevis. Ken enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served honorably during the Korean War. He married Theresa about 1953. Ken was a licensed private pilot and enjoyed traveling the country in his R.V. and traveling abroad. He was also a boating enthusiast. Ken retired from the electronics industry in 1994 and moved to the Fort Myers area. He began golfing and shooting pool with his buddies. Ken died July 19, 2011, at Hope Hospice South in Fort Myers. Albert J. Volpe | Al Volpe (pronounced Volp) was born in 1914, son of John and Rose Volpe. He lived at 514 Magnolia Street in Beverly and was active in St. Stephens Church in Beverly. He attended "Mechanics School" in lieu of high school. He enlisted in the National Guard in 1930 at age 17. He joined the US Army in September of 1944 and served in Co K of the 114th Inf in WWII in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, Germany, Australia, until October 1945. He earned the Bronze Star with 3 Oak Clusters at the Battle of the Bulge. He later served in Korea. He was awarded a Purple Heart and Army of Occupation Medal. When he returned to the US he served as Chief Warrant Officer at Fort Dix. He reported that he met Elvis Presley when he processed into the service. He retired in 1960 after a long career in the military. He met Dorothy Carr and married her in 1947. They bought a home on Peachtree Lane in Delanco. Al worked for the New Jersey Turnpike Commission. Al was a member of Beverly American Legion Post 115 for 59 years, and served as Commander. He organized the Avenue of Flags at Beverly National Cemetery, dedicated November 11, 1983. He served as Grand Marshall in the Beverly Memorial Day Parade in 2001. Roland F. Willis, Jr. | Roland Fletcher Willis, Jr. was born September 25, 1925. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1951. He was a Sgt in the 18th Infantry Div, the "Big Red One" in Germany. He served until 1951. His family was active at Dobbins Memorial Church in Delanco. Roland died January 3, 2004 at age 78. Richard J. Yardumian | Richard James Yardumian was born March 10, 1928, the son of Berge Haig and Carrie Angstadt Yardumian. Richard joined the US Air Force and served during the Korean Conflict, earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. He married Alice J. Yardumian. The couple lived in Delanco, where Alice served as Head Librarian following the retirement of Elizabeth Lewis in 1967. She was still serving in 1976 when she was acknowledged for her assistance in researching newspaper articles from Delanco Library for The Delanco Story (1976). The couple later moved to Riverton, New Jersey, then Avon Park, Florida. Alice died January 9, 1995 and James died April 29, 2007. Robert G. Zoll | Robert George Zoll was born in Riverside in 1930. He served in the US Army during Korean War. After the war he moved to Delanco. He married Helen, then worked as a Pipe Fitter at Hercules in Burlington until his retirement. He served as a Past Master of the Riverside Masonic Lodge in 1993 and was a member of Pemberton Lodge of Delanco. Robert died February 18, 2017.
