Vernon S. McDougall | Vernon S. "Bud" McDougall was born in 1921, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert R. and Ella McDougall, Sr. of Hickory Street, Delanco; brother of James and Robert R. Robert R. McDougall, Jr. Vernon married Natalie and was a resident of Delanco. He entered the US Army in July of 1942 to serve in WWII and was sent overseas in October of 1943. Bud was seriously wounded by a German S-mine. He was hospitalized in England then returned to convalesce at Halloren General Hospital on Staten Island, New York. Francis "Frank" McFadden | Francis "Frank" McFadden, husband of Anna Mae of 486 Washington Street, served in the 101st Airborne, the Glider Infantry in WWII. Owen P. “Jim” Merrill | Owen P. “Jim” Merrill was born in 1909 to a family of serious sailors. Jim was active at both Riverton Yacht Club and Red Dragon Canoe Club. Owen worked for H.B. Nevins Shipyard in City Island New York. Initially a Chief Bosun’s Mate in the US Coast Guard Temporary Reserve, he skippered in the offshore yacht patrol in the early stages of WWII. Later he joined the US Naval Reserves and commanded a 110 ft. wooden sub-chaser. He then served as navigator on an LSD and fleet tanker, seeing action in Luzon, Leyte Gulf, and Lingayen Gulf, as well as Okinawa. When he returned after the war he returned to civilian boating. He designed the Duster class sailboat and built many over the years. He established a sailmaking business in Delanco which he operated until 1980. He died in 1989. | USCG Temp Res, Rank? Anna E. Phile Miller | Anna E. Phile was born February 9, 1920 and came to Delanco with her parents Dane and Violetta Miller in 1923. She became active in Dobbins Memorial Methodist Church. She joined the US Navy WAVES March 1, 1945 and served until May 1946. She served with the NAS unit in Corpus Christi as an air traffic controller, attaining the rank of SP(Y) 3rd Class. After the war she trained as a commercial artist where she met Herman J. Miller. They later married and moved to Third Street in Delanco in 1959. Anna worked at Wanamakers department stores for over 40 years as manager of the gift-wrapping department for all of the stores. Anna was active of an all-female American Legion Post 350 and served as the post commander. Herman J. Miller | Herman J. Miller was born December 5, 1916 in Buffalo, New York. He joined the US Army Air Corps October 28, 1942 and served in the 2nd Armored Division for the balance of WWII. He referred to himself as an aircraft mechanic, working on P-38 fighters, but also served as a draftsman working on maps. He was discharged February 3, 1946. He was awarded the American Service Medal, European–African–Middle Eastern Campaign Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and WWII Victory Medal. He later attended art school on the GI bill where he met Anna E. Phile of Delanco, whom he later married. They moved to Third Street in Delanco in 1959. Herman was a gifted self-employed woodworker and sign-painter with a shop on East Union St in Burlington. He went on to work as a sign painter for Wanamaker’s Department Store in Philadelphia for 15 years. They were active in Dobbins Memorial Church and Delanco Seniors. Herman was active in American Legion Post 146 in Riverside, also a member of the Burnt Cork Association and the Highlanders Drum and Bugle Corps of Burlington. John A. “Jack” Miller | John A. “Jack” Miller enlisted in the US Navy on Monday, December 8, 1941, the day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He was quite young when he enlisted, but he trained as a metalsmith (mechanic?) on a navy repair ship in the South Pacific. He spent some extended time in the Solomon Islands. When he returned from the war he married Betty Kemble. He worked for a plant in Fallsington that manufactured equipment for nuclear power plants. He moved to Oregon for a time, then returned to Delanco to work as a supervisor at Conwed. He lived at several locations around Delanco.
