William G. Phile, Sr. | William G. Phile, Sr. was listed on the original Delanco WW II Honor Roll. He was born March 5, 1921 in Delanco, the son of Joseph C. Phile, Sr. and Jennie Gilbert. Bill joined the US Navy during WWII and served on a PT boat in the Pacific theater. Family lore indicates his boat was part of the group that evacuated Gen. MacArthur from Corrigador. Bill married Sarah Elizabeth "Betty" Taylor (1922 -2017) and they were Delanco residents for many years, residing at 1001 Burlington Avenue. Bill was an electrician and member of Washing Fire Co when it was on Union Ave. He was also Scout Master of Troop 19 before moving to Medford Leas. Bill died May 26, 2006 in Medford Leas at age 85. Ridgway W. Potts, Jr. | .Ridgway William Potts, Jr. was born June 14, 1911 probably the son of Ridgway William Potts (1888 - 1953), who was a partner in Rancocas Construction Company in Delanco. The family was living on Spruce Street in Delanco in 1930 and 1940. Ridgway served in the US Army in WWII attaining the rank of Tec 5. Ridgway appeared on the original WWII Honor Roll. Clifford R. Powell | Clifford R. Powell was born July 26, 1893 in Lumberton NJ. He married Hannah and was living in Mt. Holly in 1921; Sons Paul A. Powell and Ross E. Powell..Clifford earned his law degree and joined a Mt. Holly law firm. Clifford served gallantly in both WWI and WWII. He organized and commanded the 50th Armored Div. of the NJ National Guard, the NJ Blues, attaining the rank of Colonel. The company went on active duty in WWII and Colonel Powell commanded them through many battles in Northern France. He was highly decorated and earned the French Croix de Garre. He rose to the rank of Maj. General. Clifford served in the NJ Assembly from 1920 – 1927, serving as Speaker in 1925. He served in the NJ Senate from 1928 to 1939, serving as Senate President from 1934 to 1935. He also served as Governor of New Jersey for five days in 1935. The family moved his to Delanco in 1927, taking residence in the former Taubel House at 915 Delaware Avenue. They were active at First Presbyterian Church. After the war he served as Chief of Staff of the New Jersey National Guard under Governor Alfred Driscol. Colonel Powell died in March 28, 1973 at age 80. Paul A. Powell | Paul Albert Powell He was born in Philadelphia on September 18, 1922, the son of Colonel Clifford and Hannah Powell. He served in the US Army in WWII, attaining the rank of 1st Lt. Paul was wounded in the hip by enemy scrapnel during action in France and was sent to England for hospitalization. Paul was listed on the original Delanco WW II Honor Roll. Ross E. Powell | Ross Emery Powell was listed on the original Delanco WW II Honor Roll. He was born in Mount Holly on March 10, 1921, the son of Colonel Clifford R. Powell and Hannah Powell. He moved to Delanco with the family in 1927, taking up residence in the former Taubel Mansion at 915 Delaware Avenue. They were active at First Presbyterian Church. Ross joined the US Army at the beginning of WWII. Ross became a 1st Lt in the 414 Infantry, 104 Infantry Div. Ross was killed in action on November 24, 1944 in Germany and was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously. He was also awarded the World War II Victory Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Marksmanship Badge, American Campaign Medal, Army Presidential Unit Citation and Army Good Conduct Medal. Alfred H. Quigg | Alfred H. Quigg was born in Delanco in September of 1924. He proudly served in the US Army during WWII. He married Dorothy E. Casey and they settled at 717 Laurel Street in Delanco. Children include Carolyn McCloskey. The were life members of Dobbins Methodist Church and Alfred was a Life Member of Washington Fire Co No 1 (50 Years). Horace C. Randall, Jr. | Horace Craven Randall, Jr. was born September29, 1914, one of nine children to Horace and Mamry Edna Van Sant Randall, Sr. of Langhorne, Buchks County, Pennsylvania. The family was living at 715 Chestnut Street in Delanco when Horace joined the US Army to fight in the Pacific in WWII. He was assigned to an Anti-aircraft coast artillery battalion and earned the rank of Corporal Tech 5. Horace died March 12, 2000 in Willingboro at age 85 and was buried in Lakeview Memorial Park in Cinnaminson. Samuel S. Raup | Samuel S. Raup was born November 29, 1923 in Sunbury, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. He was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Fine Arts, and a member emeritus of the Philadelphia American Institute of Architects. Sam entered WW II as a member of the 10th Mountain Division, serving in the mountains of Italy. He attained the rank of Tech 5 and was awarded the Bronze Star. After the war, he continued to be an active member in reunion ski events. He enjoyed travel, art, history and music, especially jazz. He married Edith Foltz in 1947; two daughters, Gretchen Timmons, and Laurie Sabol. The family lived on Delaware Ave in Delanco. Sam died Saturday, November 19, 2005 at age 81 at the Masonic Village Medical Center, Elizabethtown PA. He is buried in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, Lebanon County, PA. Robert C. Reeves | Robert Cooper "Bob" Reeves was born April 28, 1921, the son of Mr. and Mrs. George B. Reeves of Union Avenue between Burlington and Chestnut in Delanco. Bob graduated from Burlington High School and worked for Public Service after graduation. He married Dorothy Marie Silpath in 1942 and they settled in Delanco. Bob enlisted in the US Army Air Corp on February 8, 1943. He trained as a bombardier on B-17 Flying Fortresses and received his commission and his wings at Roswell in October 1943. He shipped overseas to England and was assigned to 550th Bombardment Squadron, 385th Bombardier Group " Van's Valiants" and was active in bombardments in Europe. On July 16 1944, on Mission 153 targeting Stuttgart, his B-17 received battle damage and mechanical failure. It was forced to emergency landing in Dubendorf, Switzerland. The crew was interned under Swiss control. Reeves escaped and returned to duty completing 25 combat missions for which he earned the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters. Robert was listed on the original Delanco WW II Honor Roll. John A. Reitmeier | John A. Reitmeier was born June 9, 1918, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Reitmeier. John lived in Delanco as a youth. He joined the US Army Air Corp during WWII and served as a navigator on a B-24 Liberator bomber in Europe. His plane was shot down over France. Initially listed as Missing in Action, John had been taken prisoner. He was liberated by Allied forces. He earned the rank of Lieutenant by the end of his service. He married Kathrine M. Dougherty in 1967. John died December 2, 2000. Katherine died on April 14, 2015. William A. Rickards, III | William A. "Bill" Rickards, III was born May 1, 1925 to William A. and Christine Rickards, Jr. who lived in the Olney section of Philadelphia. Bill attended Olney High School. The family moved to Moorestown NJ in October of 1942, and Bill transferred to Moorestown High School. When WWII broke out, Bill was drafted out of high school. He joined the US Army in August of 1943 and trained at Fort Bragg as an auto mechanic. He was then sent to Camp Carson in Colorado and trained in the Mule Team. He was deployed and served in Germany until April of 1946 with the rank of Private. Bill returned to find that his father had passed away during his deployment. Sadly, the Army had not delivered the notification. The family moved to Delanco in January of 1948 and lived at 230 Union Avenue until 1961. Bill finished his high school education in Philadelphia then went to work for RCA and later for the State of New Jersey. He never married. Charles F. Rider, DDS | Charles F. Rider was listed on the original Delanco WW II Honor Roll. He was born in Riverside in 1927. He married Mary Margaret "Margo" Gibbons and raised his family in Delanco. He graduated from Camden Catholic High School in Camden, NJ, St. Francis University in Loretto, PA and Temple University School of Dentistry in Philadelphia, PA. He joined the US Navy in 1944 and served at the Naval Hospital in Philadelphia until the end of the war. He established a dental practice in Palmyra in 1953, which he ran for 42 years until he retired in 1995. His family was active in St. Peters Parish in Riverside. Oliver E. Ringer | Oliver E. Ringer was born in 1912 in Bavaria, Kansas. He joined the US Navy on June 3, 1930 in peacetime, but served through WWII and the Korean Conflict. He served in the Pacific aboard the USS Texas until 1936, then sailed to China aboard the USS Pecos, followed by the USS Baker and USS JD Edwards. He was aboard the USS Chester when it entered Pearl Harbor shortly after the attack, December 1941. He also served on the USS Sarsfield and USS McCalla, among others. He was later transferred to the USS Cabot in Okinawa in support of a pending attack on Japan which never took place. Oliver served until 1953, attaining the rank of Chief Petty Officer/Boatswain’s Mate. After discharge he married Dora Koppen and lived on Lilac Lane in Delanco. He transferred to Fleet Reserve in March 1953 and retired June 1, 1960 after 30 years of active and reserve service. Oliver moved to Ellsworth in 1971. He married (2nd) Pearl Black Hudson in 1972.
