Samuel S. Raup Samuel S. Raup was born November 29, 1923 in Sunbury, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. He was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Fine Arts, and a member emeritus of the Philadelphia American Institute of Architects. Sam entered WW II as a member of the 10th Mountain Division, serving in the mountains of Italy. He attained the rank of Tech 5 and was awarded the Bronze Star. After the war, he continued to be an active member in reunion ski events. He enjoyed travel, art, history and music, especially jazz. He married Edith Foltz in 1947; two daughters, Gretchen Timmons, and Laurie Sabol. The family lived on Delaware Ave in Delanco. Sam died Saturday, November 19, 2005 at age 81 at the Masonic Village Medical Center, Elizabethtown PA. He is buried in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, Lebanon County, PA. Robert C. Reeves Robert Cooper "Bob" Reeves was born April 28, 1921, the son of Mr. and Mrs. George B. Reeves of Union Avenue between Burlington and Chestnut in Delanco. Bob graduated from Burlington High School and worked for Public Service after graduation. He married Dorothy Marie Silpath in 1942 and they settled in Delanco. Bob enlisted in the US Army Air Corp on February 8, 1943. He trained as a bombardier on B-17 Flying Fortresses and received his commission and his wings at Roswell in October 1943. He shipped overseas to England and was assigned to 550th Bombardment Squadron, 385th Bombardier Group " Van's Valiants" and was active in bombardments in Europe. On July 16 1944, on Mission 153 targeting Stuttgart, his B-17 received battle damage and mechanical failure. It was forced to emergency landing in Dubendorf, Switzerland. The crew was interned under Swiss control. Reeves escaped and returned to duty completing 25 combat missions for which he earned the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters. Robert was listed on the original Delanco WW II Honor Roll. He died on January 17, 1987 at age 65 and is buried in the Eighth Air Force Museum Memorial Garden in Savannah, Georgia. John A. Reitmeier John A. Reitmeier was born June 9, 1918, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Reitmeier. John lived in Delanco as a youth. He joined the US Army Air Corp during WWII and served as a navigator on a B-24 Liberator bomber in Europe. His plane was shot down over France. Initially listed as Missing in Action, John had been taken prisoner. He was liberated by Allied forces. He earned the rank of Lieutenant by the end of his service. He married Kathrine M. Dougherty in 1967. John died December 2, 2000. Katherine died on April 14, 2015. Both are buried in Lakeview Memorial Park in Cinnaminson. Edward A. Reynolds Edward Albe Reynolds was born February 18, 1931 in Orland PA. He graduated high school in Erdenheim Pennsylvania in 1949. Ed joined the US Army on January 19, 1949 and graduated from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1973, training as an artillery specialist. He graduated from the Command and General Staff College. He served in both Germany and Korea retiring with the rank of Colonel. After his service, his work took him to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania where he became active with the VFW. He married Margaret and has three daughters: Cheryl, Debbie and Robin.. He lived in Burlington City, then moved to Delanco in 1955 and lived at 532 Burlington Avenue in Delanco. Ed became very active in Washington Fire Co No 1 and served as Fire Chief, Emergency Management Coordinator at the township and county level. He was certified as an Emergency Management Coordinator, a Fire Fighter Level Three, Hazardous Materials Technician and an Adult Educator in the State of New Jersey. He has served as an instructor at the Fire, EMS, and Police Academy and is considered a Nuclear Weapons Specialist. He served as a researcher for The Delanco Story (1976). Col. Alexander Rhodes Alexander Rhodes was born in Bordeaux France in 1842 and emigrated to the US in 1859. He immediately became involved with inventor, Brutus de Villeroi’s Alligator submarine project. He stayed with the project until 1860 and it is believed that he stayed briefly at the Delaranco Hotel with the rest of the crew. Alexander was considered the Mate in charge of the Alligator Junior prototype from 1859, and was in charge of the military version of the sub until it reached Fortress Monroe. He lived in Delanco before moving to Riverside prior to his enlistment. He later served as a Fireman Second Class on the "USGB Wissahickon", the "USS Vermont" and the "USS Princeton". He was wounded and discharged June 29, 1864. He moved to Mr. Buck’s Hotel in Delanco to recover from his injuries and stayed and worked at the hotel about two years. He married Rose in Riverside in 1865. They were often referred to as the first bride and groom married in Riverside. They had at least 5 children. Alexander Rhodes was one of the early leaders in Progress (Riverside, New Jersey). He was a Justice of the Peace before 1900 when that office was extremely busy and important. Alexander was a clerk and long time member and trustee of the school board. In 1892 he was one of the five men who helped form the fire company. He also appears on the roll of the Township Committee in 1897. He moved to the Civil War Soldiers’ Home in Dayton Ohio in November 1898 where he died August 16, 1920. Charles G. “Rick” Rickards Charles Grant "Rick" Rickards was born July 25, 1930 in Chestnut Hill Hospital in Philadelphia. He moved with his family to 230 Union Avenue, Delanco in 1948. Rick joined the US Air Force reserves on December 20, 1950 and served intil 1958 during the Korean Conflict. His specialty was the weather department and he served all eight years at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey with the rank of Private. He married Veronica "Ronnie" in October of 1957. After the service, Rick served as a mail carrier for a year, then became the first delivery driver for Drink-a-Toast Company in 1953. He also ran Rick's Sign business in Delanco. The family enjoyed travel and summer trips to Brant Beach on Long Beach Island. Ronnie died in 2016. Rick passed away in Delran on March 25, 2023 at the age of 92. USAF Res Pvt ? William A. Rickards, III William A. "Bill" Rickards, III was born May 1, 1925 to William A. and Christine Rickards, Jr. who lived in the Olney section of Philadelphia. Bill attended Olney High School. The family moved to Moorestown NJ in October of 1942, and Bill transferred to Moorestown High School. When WWII broke out, Bill was drafted out of high school. He joined the US Army in August of 1943 and trained at Fort Bragg as an auto mechanic. He was then sent to Camp Carson in Colorado and trained in the Mule Team. He was deployed and served in Germany until April of 1946 with the rank of Private. Bill returned to find that his father had passed away during his deployment. Sadly, the Army had not delivered the notification. The family moved to Delanco in January of 1948 and lived at 230 Union Avenue until 1961. Bill finished his high school education in Philadelphia then went to work for RCA and later for the State of New Jersey. He never married. Charles F. Rider, DDS Charles F. Rider was listed on the original Delanco WW II Honor Roll. He was born in Riverside in 1927. He married Mary Margaret "Margo" Gibbons and raised his family in Delanco. He graduated from Camden Catholic High School in Camden, NJ, St. Francis University in Loretto, PA and Temple University School of Dentistry in Philadelphia, PA. He joined the US Navy in 1944 and served at the Naval Hospital in Philadelphia until the end of the war. He established a dental practice in Palmyra in 1953, which he ran for 42 years until he retired in 1995. His family was active in St. Peters Parish in Riverside. Andress S. Ridgway Andress Stanley Ridgway was born May 9, 1894 to Andress Crittendon and Mary Ridgway of Delanco. Stanley graduated from Cornell University with a Masters in Engineering in 1916. He served in the US Army during WWI. He was discharged December 28 1918 and returned to Delanco. He went to work as an assistant engineer in the works production department of the Merchant Shipbuilding Co. of Harriman, Pennsylvania. Stanley married Eva S, Steinman. He was listed on Delanco's original WWI Honor Roll and was honored for his service during WWI on Memorial Day in 1928. He later lived in Akron Ohio. He was living in Washington DC when he died in 1975 at age 80 He is buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Burlington. US Army ? WWI 1824 - 1975
Rev. George Whitfield Ridout George Whitfield Ridout was born in 1870 in Bourne Bay. St. Johns Nova Scotia. His sea captain father was lost at sea about 1873 and may have been captured by pirates. George began seminary training in St. Johns, then moved to Boston with his fiancee to complete his degree. He married Mary Smith in 1893. They moved to Delanco in 1897, when George was called to Delanco Methodist Church as pastor. In 1898, Rev. Ridout helped to establish the Fletcher Grove Camp Meeting Association. The family left Delanco in 1900. Rev. Ridout served for 15 months during WWI as a YMCA Chaplain in France. George and Mary later served as missionaries. Rev Ridout died in 1954 at age 84. Oliver E. Ringer Oliver E. Ringer was born in 1912 in Bavaria, Kansas. He joined the US Navy on June 3, 1930 in peacetime, but served through WWII and the Korean Conflict. He served in the Pacific aboard the USS Texas until 1936, then sailed to China aboard the USS Pecos, followed by the USS Baker and USS JD Edwards. He was aboard the USS Chester when it entered Pearl Harbor shortly after the attack, December 1941. He also served on the USS Sarsfield and USS McCalla, among others. He was later transferred to the USS Cabot in Okinawa in support of a pending attack on Japan which never took place. Oliver served until 1953, attaining the rank of Chief Petty Officer/Boatswain’s Mate. After discharge he married Dora Koppen and lived on Lilac Lane in Delanco. He transferred to Fleet Reserve in March 1953 and retired June 1, 1960 after 30 years of active and reserve service. Oliver moved to Ellsworth in 1971. He married (2nd) Pearl Black Hudson in 1972. He died in Florida in 2009 at age 97 and is buried in Lakeview Memorial Park in Cinnaminson. Elizabeth "Betty" Sutton Robbins Elizabeth "Betty" Sutton was born in 1919 on her family's dairy farm in Columbus, New Jersey. Betty earned degrees in Home Economics from the Women's College of the University of North Carolina, and a master's degree from Drexel University. Her jobs took her to far flung corners of the country; running the nursery of a women's correctional institution; dietician for the Devereux Camp in Anson, Maine; dietician and home economics teacher at the Radford School for Girls in El Paso; and nurse's aide in wartime Texas. In WWII she served as a nurse’s aide and a dietician at the Devereaux Camp in Aniston Maine. After the war she met and married Dr. Morris A. Robbins and assisted him in establishing and operating his medical practice in Columbus. The couple had two children. In 1956 they moved to 1410 Second Street in Delanco where they lived for more than 50 years. Betty continued her career teaching in Wrightstown and Roebling, and working in her husband's medical office. She was a tireless volunteer with the Burlington County Medical Society Auxiliary and the Zurbrugg Hospital Auxiliary and an active and committed member of her church. In later years, following Morris' death in 2004, Betty 'retired' to Riverview Estates in Riverton, where she lived for many years. She died March 11, 2011 and is buried with Morris in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Florence, NJ. US Army, Rank? Nurses Aide, Dietician WWII, Anson, Maine 1919 – 2011
