Frederick A. Schoenhofer | Frederick A. Schoenhofer was born in Philadelphia in 1925. Fred served in the US Navy from 1942 – 1945 aboard the Independence Class aircraft carrier USS Langley (CV-1), The USS Langley was the United States Navy's first aircraft carrier, converted in 1920 from the collier USS Jupiter, and also the US Navy's first turbo-electric-powered ship. which had a long and distinguished service record in the South Pacific during WWII. Fred married Elinore J. Field in 1946. They lived in Delanco from 1953 to 1967 and again from 1982 to 2011 at 2011 Burlington Avenue in Delanco for 35 years. They were active members of St Joseph’s Parish in Beverly. Fred was a carpenter for Cherry Hill Hyatt until he retired. He was an active member of Samuel T. Lambert VFW Post 3020 in Riverside. Donald R. Schwartz, Sr. | Donald Richard Schwartz, Sr. was born in Beverly on March 20, 1937. He served honorably in the US Navy, probably during the Korean Conflict. Don worked for his father, Joe Schwartz at Holiday Lake in Delanco in the late 1950s and early 1960s. In July of 1962, Joe died suddenly and Don was asked to step in as manager. Don managed the lake until 1972. Don also owned Tom’s Steaks in Edgewater Park. He lived in Riverside for most of his life. Don later moved to Hollywood, then Westminster, Orange Co, California to live with his son, Don died on December 13, 2017 at home. George C. Scott | George C. Scott was born in Philadelphia in 1926 to N. Budd and Ida Steinmann Scott. One brother Howard B. Scott. The family was living at 320 Vine Street in 1940. George enlisted in the US Navy and served on the USS Anacostia (AO-94), an Escambia-class replenishment oiler in the Western Pacific in WWII. His name was found in a crew autograph book dated 1945. Nickname "Sparky". Probably an electrician. George married Marie L. Scott, nee Grab, of Delanco in 1952. They were married for 47 years. They appear to have lived in Cinnaminson, then at 201 Delview Lane in Delanco. George served as Master PGC of Riverside Masonic Lodge #187 in 1964. George died February 11 1999 at age 73 yrs. Marie died in 2009 at age 83. Both are buried in Lakeview Memorial Park in Cinnaminson. George C. Harvey Scott, Sr. | Harvey Scott, Sr. was born in 1922 to Vincent and Edith R. Scott. He lived in Delanco and was a star pitcher for the Delanco AC Baseball Team. He joined the US Army National Guard and was sent to serve overseas in WWII. He was injured and received a medical discharge. He married Helen P. Scott and died in 1982 at the age of 59. Howard B. Scott | Howard B. Scott was born December 4, 1927 in Pennsylvania to N. Budd and Ida Steinmann Scott. Brother of George C. Scott. When Howard was 16, he lied about his age in order to join the US Navy. WWII was winding down and he felt he was missing an opportunity to see combat. Instead he signed on to an Antarctic Expedition with Admiral Byrd. He returned to the US Navy during the Korean Conflict and served on the USS Pine Island (AV-12), a Currituck-class seaplane tender, is the only ship of the United States Navy to hold this name. He married Ruth and lived in Delran. In later years, he became a tireless volunteer for the USS New Jersey (BB-62) when it opened to visitors in Camden NJ. Vincent X. Scott, Jr. | Vincent X. Scott, Jr. was born June 16 1920 to Vincent and Edith Stockton Scott, Sr. of Delanco; Sibling of Walter Scott. Vince married Betty Lou Henderson. He joined the US Army in 1939 just prior to WWII as a private or a corporal, assigned to Cannon Co, 114th Infantry Regiment, 44th Infantry Division as a 604 Light Machine Gunner. His main base was Fort Lewis Washington. Vincent was killed in action in France on February 16, 1945 and is buried with his family in the veteran's section of Memorial Cemetery in Beverly. He was awarded the Purple Heart. Henry A. Sejda | Henry J. Sejda was born May 2, 1916 in Bridesburg, Philadephia, PA. He attended St. John Cantius Parochial School and helped pay his tuition by shoveling coal for the school's heating boiler in the basement. Henry entered the US Navy during WWII and was assigned to the SeaBees. He shipped out of San Diego and was stationed at Naha Air Base in Okinawa, Japan. Naha was the former Oroku Naval Air Base, captured by the US on April 1, 1945 in the Battle of Okinawa. It was taken over by the US Air Force under control of the Pacific Air Forces (PACAF). After the service, Henry married Margaret M. Richardson. Margaret worked at H.K. Porter during WWII and served as a telephone operator in Riverside. They settled in Delanco in 1955, living on Poplar and Buttonwood Streets in Delanco. Henry and Margaret raised eleven children and the family was very active in St. Peter's Parish in Riverside where Margaret served as Eucharistic Minister. Henry worked for Rohm & Haas in Bristol, PA. Henry died December 14, 1988 and Margaret died July 17, 2003. Walter A. Shaw | Walter A. "Walt" Shaw was born in Delanco on May 26, 1923, the youngest of 12 children of Francis and Alice Shaw. His father was station master for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Delanco and Riverside, and his mother was a Postmistress in Delanco. The family lived at 229 Vine Street. Walt graduated Delanco schools in 1938. Graduated Burlington City High School in 1942. He joined the US Army in February 1943, serving in Europe in WWII. He served as a gunner in the 701st Tank Battalion in Europe. His unit landed on Utah Beach, in Normandy 6-weeks after D-Day and later engaged in the Battle of the Bulge. He was honorably discharged in December of 1945. He was awarded the Purple Heart. He married Elizabeth Virginia Elmes on April 26, 1948 and moved to Mt. Holly. Four children. Walt worked in civil service at the paint shop at Fort Dix for 30 years. He also joined the Washington Fire Co and served for over 60 years. Walter died in 2005 and is buried in William C. Walter “Skeets” Shields | Walter Conrad "Skeets" Shields was born in Moorestown in 1939. He married Marilyn McIntosh of Riverton in 1976. They moved to Delanco and raised two children. Walter served in the US Air Force, presumably during the Vietnam War, though this is not confirmed. He went by the nickname Skeeter or Skeets. Walter was a retired welder of over forty years for Bridge Machine, Sherman Car Wash, Campbell Soup Equipment Center and Allentown Caging. He died July 27, 2007 at home at the age of 68. Howard A. Shoch | Howard Allen Shoch was born October 25, 1895 in Swedesboro NJ to Lewis Morton and Mary Ann Pine Schoch; Sibling of Walter M Shoch. Howard attended Asbury College in Wilmore Kentucky. The family moved to Walnut Avenue in Delanco prior to WWI. He served in the US Army during WWI and was listed on Delanco's original WWI Honor Roll. He Howard appears to have enlisted right out of college on June 15, 1918 at age 21. Enlistment records indicate he had grey eyes and auburn hair. We continue to research his military record.
